Overview
The Design Engineer will support the Design Directorate within the SSN-AUKUS Support Branch, providing specialist engineering expertise and independent technical judgement for complex, high-risk, safety-critical submarine systems and infrastructure. The role requires demonstrated experience assuring engineering designs across all design phases, with the ability to provide authoritative independent advice to ASA governance forums. Key Duties and Deliverables
- Lead design activities and assure technical compliance for submarine platforms, systems, facilities, and enabling infrastructure across all design phases
- Ensure fitness-for-purpose, safety, and configuration control of all engineering designs, aligned with Australian and partner-nation (UK/US) requirements
- Participate in structured design reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR or equivalent) and produce design assurance and technical compliance reports
- Develop Safety-in-Design documentation including hazard identification and risk analysis for safety-critical submarine systems
- Manage interface and integration activities across submarine design elements and enabling infrastructure
- Provide independent, authoritative technical advice to ASA governance forums on design compliance, safety, and configuration control
Essential Criteria
- Active NV1 (or above) AGSVA security clearance
- Relevant tertiary qualification in engineering (mechanical, systems, electrical, or related discipline)
- Demonstrated experience assuring engineering designs for complex, safety-critical Defence systems or platforms
- Experience participating in or leading structured design reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR or equivalent)
- Ability to produce Safety-in-Design documentation including hazard identification and risk analysis
- Strong technical writing skills and ability to provide clear, authoritative engineering advice to senior stakeholders
Desirable Criteria
- Direct experience on submarine or naval platform design programs, preferably in AUKUS partner nations (Australia, UK, US)
- Familiarity with Australian and partner-nation design standards, certification requirements, and nuclear-powered submarine safety frameworks
- Experience working in ITAR-controlled environments and managing export-controlled information
- Chartered or Professional Engineer status (Engineers Australia or equivalent)
